In a remarkable debut that has captured the hearts of the local community, Lower Heath CE Primary School’s equestrian team has qualified for the prestigious National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) finals at Hickstead — one of the most iconic venues in British show jumping.
Competing for the first time as a team, the young riders — Lauren Nellies (riding Jimmy), Grace Richards (on Polly), Issy Richards (with Silver), and Evie Nellies (on Lily) — took part in the NSEA inter-schools qualifier at Ashwood Equestrian Centre. Despite being up against much larger state and private schools, the Lower Heath team delivered an outstanding performance that secured them a place at the national finals this August.
The team’s success is all the more impressive given the size of the school. Nestled in rural Shropshire, Lower Heath CE Primary is a small school with big dreams — and now, a big achievement to match. Their qualification includes two team events and six individual, giving these young riders a chance to shine on a national stage. Keen to build on their success, they gained further qualifications on a visit to Beaverhall Equestrian Centre.
Headteacher Helen Reynolds expressed her pride in the team’s accomplishment: “This is a huge milestone for our school. The dedication and talent of our riders, along with the support of their families and the school community, has been truly inspiring. We’re incredibly proud of them.”
As the team prepares for Hickstead, the school is hoping to give the riders a unified look by kitting them out in matching Lower Heath saddle pads, ties, caps, and polo shirts. They are currently seeking sponsorship from local businesses to help fund the team kit.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to support grassroots sport and be part of something really special,” said Gemma Nellies who brought the equestrian team together. “Our riders have already shown what’s possible with determination and teamwork — now we want to help them look and feel like the champions they are.”
With the finals just weeks away, the excitement is building. One thing is certain: Lower Heath CE Primary may be small, but their spirit, talent, and ambition are anything but.
