Lower Heath Pupils Shine in English Speaking Board Exams

In a world where screens often dominate and face-to-face communication is on the decline, pupils at Lower Heath CE Primary School have proven that the art of speaking is alive and thriving. As part of the school’s inspiring Speak and Shine project, children recently took part in the prestigious English Speaking Board (ESB) exams and their performances were nothing short of exceptional.

The ESB, a national organisation, is dedicated to promoting effective oral communication skills. Its assessments encourage learners to express themselves with clarity, confidence, and creativity, skills that are increasingly vital in today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world.

Lower Heath’s Speak and Shine initiative was introduced this year to help pupils develop these essential life skills. Over several weeks, children worked independently to memorise poems, deliver book readings, and present talks about special objects that held personal meaning. The project culminated in formal ESB assessments, where each child had the opportunity to showcase their speaking talents.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our pupils,” said Ms Helen Reynolds, Headteacher and project lead. “They’ve shown such courage and independence. In a time when technology is often blamed for reducing social interaction, this project has helped our children find their voices and use them powerfully.”

The children’s enthusiasm was just as evident. “I was nervous at first,” admitted Year 6 pupil Dorothy, “but when I started talking about my family cheese making business, I felt really proud. It was like telling a story that mattered.”

“I loved learning my poem,” added Year 5 pupil, Lauren. “I didn’t think I could remember it all, but I did and I even made the examiner smile!”

The ESB assessments are designed not just to test memory or performance, but to nurture confidence, self-expression, and the ability to engage an audience skills that will serve these young learners for life.

Ms Reynolds added, “This isn’t just about passing an exam. It’s about helping children believe in themselves, speak with purpose, and connect with others. These are skills that will carry them far beyond the classroom.”

With their voices heard and their confidence soaring, the children of Lower Heath have truly spoken and shone.
