At Lower Heath CE Primary School and Nursery, we believe that every member of our school community has the potential to be a changemaker. We actively encourage children and adults alike to take responsibility for leading positive change—within our school, our local community and the wider world.
Our connected curriculum provides meaningful opportunities for pupils to engage in social action and challenge injustice. For example, during the study theme “What are rivers and how are they used?”, pupils explored the issue of pollution in the River Severn. Their learning led to real-world action, including writing to our local MP to advocate for environmental improvements. In previous years, children have initiated community projects such as litter picking and singing at local care homes—demonstrating compassion, initiative and leadership.
Each class learns about courageous advocates from around the world—past and present—who have faced injustice and overcome adversity to help others. Through these stories, children reflect on the challenges these individuals faced and how they made a difference. This learning helps pupils develop empathy, a sense of justice, and the belief that they too can be agents of change.
By encouraging our children to “let their light shine,” we nurture their unique talents and inspire them to bring hope to others. We take time to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of a nurturing school community, where supportive relationships allow us to live life in all its fullness and flourish as individuals.
Pupils play an active role in selecting the local, national, and global causes we support. In recent years, we have raised funds for:
