Year 1/2 – Skylark Class

Welcome to Skylark Class!

In Skylark class, we soar to new heights with learning that’s as exciting as it is educational. In Year 1/2 we are nurtured under the caring wings of Mrs Leighton and Mrs Ward, our dedicated teachers who guide skylarks in their learning journey.

Supported by the wonderful Mrs Foxall and Mrs Kirk, our classroom is a vibrant community where every child is encouraged to be independent and curious. We believe in hands-on experiences, creative exploration, and fostering a love for learning that lasts a lifetime.

Here’s a peek at our daily adventures:

  • Morning Mastery: Each day begins with maths, where we focus on increasing our number fluency and honing our mathematical abilities. We use Kinetic Letters to enhance our handwriting skills. We delve into phonics with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, fostering a love for reading that supports our writing. Using Curious Quests and Pathways to Write, we navigate through literary adventures that inspire our writing tasks.
  • Afternoon Discoveries: Our afternoons are filled with enriching activities that span the wider curriculum, igniting a passion for learning beyond the basics.
  • Daily worship: As a church school, we have daily worship. This can be whole school or within class. Whole school worship allows us to celebrate our faith as a school family and to celebrate our school values: love, respect, faith, fellowship and thankfulness. We have the opportunity once per term to lead worship for the rest of the school – we explore themes through stories, we write prayers and allow time for reflecting too. On our page, we have included an example of one of the presentations we use to lead worship.
  • Courageous Advocacy: We’re committed to nurturing a love for learning that encourages our students to shine academically and personally. We are preparing children to be active citizens and to ‘let their light shine’ outside of the school building. Every term, Skylark work on a Courageous Advocacy project, for example, encouraging the whole school to recycle paper. The children proudly set up and led this themselves and are huge advocates for positive change. By involving the children, we are developing their leadership skills and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the world around them.

Keep an eye on this page for updates on our class projects, trips, and special events.

We can’t wait to share the exciting world of Skylark class with you!
